At The Clavadel, we believe that recovery is about more than just medical care—it’s also about the space that surrounds you. While The Clavadel in its current form has been offering outstanding post-operative rehabilitation since 2014, the story of this much-loved site stretches back over a century, with roots deep in Guildford’s local heritage.

L’eau, aqua, wasser – wherever you hail from in the world, the recuperative properties of water have been universally known and celebrated for more than two millennia.

From wellness spas to elaborate bath houses, it was Greco-Roman society that first recognised the therapeutic importance of H²O by establishing sacred sites in the vicinity of natural springs where devotees could gather to bathe in the curative waters or drink directly from their life-enhancing source.

Thursday, April 22, marked the tenth anniversary of the day The Clavadel welcomed its first patients; 10 years at the heart of Guildford’s healthcare community and more than 10 years since Clavadel director Charles Geoghegan first unveiled his plans for a fresh approach to post-operative rehabilitation in the UK. Since that auspicious day, we have been privileged to care for the thousands of patients who have walked through our doors and continue to do so, entrusting us with their ultimate well-being.

Every year, staff and management of The Clavadel gather together to recognise the selflessness and dedication that is the hallmark of everything we do; however, 2024 marked a special milestone: our ten-year anniversary of delivering the very best in pre- and post-operative care and rehabilitation to the people of Guildford, the South East, and beyond.

Traditionally, the new year comes weighed down with well-intentioned resolutions. Here at The Clavadel, however, our singular resolve has been to continue with a programme of expansion and improvements to the services we offer. As a result, we are pleased to announce we have completed refurbishing our physiotherapy treatment rooms.

Knowledge is a valuable commodity at any time, but when it comes to dealing with a challenging medical procedure and the need to maximise one’s recovery, it is positively invaluable. So, time spent poring over a good book may well be the best few hours you will ever spend.

Held at Guildford Pavilion on the afternoon and evening of September 22, One Orthopaedics’ annual Educational Event – co-sponsored, this year, by The Clavadel – adopted technological advancement as its theme for discussion.

Anyone who has spent time at The Clavadel will surely attest to the selfless devotion to duty of each and every member of our staff. Indeed, residents have often made complimentary remarks on it at the end of their stay.

As you might expect from a company steeped in a history of caring, ecological awareness – coupled with a sense of community engagement – is a social responsibility keenly felt by everyone in the Clavadel management team.

Any successful journey along the road to wellbeing should realistically include a holistic approach to healing that brings harmony between mind and body.

On Thursday February 9, 2023, we were pleased to host a comprehensive and informative talk from a leading consultant who discussed the challenges and potential options of those facing knee replacement surgery.

As part of our recent reappraisal of the decor at The Clavadel, the artworks that adorn the rooms of the patient bedrooms were always going to play an important part in the interior design process.

Total joint replacement surgery is considered as one of the most successful medical interventions, with significant pain relief and improvement in physical function and quality of life for patients with severe osteoarthritis. However, the recovery for some remains difficult and prolonged with not always optimal recovery of functionality.

On Friday, June 3rd, 2022, patients and staff at The Clavadel gathered in grateful celebration for the life and constant, reassuring presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on the occasion of her 70th year as ‘Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories, and Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith’.

It certainly feels like it has been a long winter – overshadowed, of course, by the restrictions placed on us all by the national coronavirus lockdown. But behind the scenes, here at The Clavadel, we have been busy sowing the seeds of recovery with an exciting addition to our facilities.

When it’s a fine summer’s day in England and you’re feeling relaxed, what could be better than to set up the barbecue and invite good company round to share your happiness? Well, at The Clavadel we did just that, except in our case there was no need get on the phone as our friends were already here.
