GaitON: Keeping stride with new technology

As part of our commitment to ensuring patients receive a comprehensive complement of treatment options, The Clavadel is pleased to offer a new service: gait analysis.

An essential function of everyday living, ‘gait’ is the word to describe the pattern by which a person proceeds on foot ̶ their walking style, in essence.

By detailed assessment of the walking cycle, it becomes possible to identify any concerns surrounding potentially problematic gait or postural irregularities resulting from existing joint pain, inflammation, stiffness, muscle weakness, or long-term compensations (unconscious adjustments). This assessment is known as gait analysis.

So, how does it work?

With the aid of non-invasive markers (stickers) attached to both legs at the hips, knees, and ankles, the GaitON system employs advanced technology whereby cameras record movement for slow motion viewing and two-dimensional analysis, while simultaneously measuring related parameters such as joint angles, body alignment, speed, cadence (rhythmic flow), and stride length to construct a data-driven model of the body. A detailed report will then be generated that informs subsequent decisions regarding treatment.

In a process lasting approximately 45 minutes, the patient is guided throughout by a physiotherapist who will discuss the results and arrange any repeat appointments to track ongoing progress.

An important addition to the therapist’s arsenal

Any opportunity to improve outcomes during the surgical pre- and post-rehabilitative period should be warmly welcomed, as the positive feedback received to date from patients and staff alike can attest to.

Those undergoing gait analysis via the GaitON system report a positive experience, describing it as ‘enjoyable’ and ‘informative’, while expressing an interest in pursuing further treatments.

Some of the many favourable comments include: ‘It highlights, visually, what I’m feeling in my body’; ‘It’s good to see the results which have confirmed how I’m walking and feeling since my injury’; and ‘A valuable service’.

It appears the role of gait analysis as part of the rehabilitative process is already confirmed as significant in the return to wellbeing.

Currently available for in-patients only. Out-patient appointments will be available from September and can be arranged by telephoning our main switchboard on 01483 561944 for an initial consultation.
